Since its debut in 2021,the Hulu series Only Murders in the Building has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards and has kept viewers glued to their seats. If you are a fan of the crime comedy-drama show, you may be wondering if it is possible to visit the Arconia while you are in Manhattan. The answer is yes! The Arconia is real, and you can admire it for yourself on your next visit to NYC.
The Real Name of the Arconia is the Belnord
While the apartment building in Only Murders in the Building goes by the name “the Arconia” in the series, it is actually called the Belnord. It was constructed clear back in 1909, and is in the National Register of Historic Places as well as having been designated a New York City Landmark.
The Belnord takes up an entire city block. At the time of its construction, the architect claimed it was the “largest apartment house in this country, if not in the world.” It boasted a number of luxuries that delighted residents. These included the beautiful courtyard as well as a rooftop laundry zone and ice machines (at the time, ice machines and laundry facilities were top-of-the-line amenities).
During the 1970s, the building was rundown and neglected, its golden age long past. The tenants eventually organized a 16-year rent strike against then-owner Lillian Seril. In 1994, Seril finally gave up and sold the property, after which she resided in it until she died a decade later.
The new owner of the building was Extell Development Company, which poured $100 million into repairs and upgrades. In 2015, HFZ Capital Group purchased the residential section of the Belnord for $575 million. This company went further in renovating and improving the units.
Some units in the building used to go for several hundred dollars a month (due to rent controls). Today, however, there are units at the Belnord that are worth millions. Amenities at the apartment include a sports court, a fitness center, a lounge, a dining room, and rooms for children and teens.
